The CAL Special Populations & Issues Interest Group held its spring meeting at the Denver Public Library’s Community Technology Center on Monday, March 19, at 10:15 a.m. Please keep the conversation going by posting comments here!

NOTES:

Leslie Williams, Hillary Estner, Pilar Castro-Reino, Warren Taylor, Carmen Zamarippa, Oksana Hoard (Co-Chair) and Melanie Colletti (Co-Chair) in attendance. Ghada Elturk attended virtually.

Is anyone going to CLiC in Pueblo in April? Please post if you would be interested in representing Special Populations by distributing business cards with our website information (Or possibly staffing a poster session? Is it too late?).

Do you have any ideas for an LSTA proposal for Special Populations? Applications are being accepted starting May 4!

Please share any ideas you have regarding possible practicum ideas for DU students. The Group discussed creating an admin/liaison position, so that a practicum student could keep us organized, attend other related groups’ meetings and report, etc.

The International Cultural Exchange Interest Group is willing to collaborate with Special Populations to propose a panel discussion at CAL focused on discovering the needs of the populations we serve. Please post here if you’re interested, and we can pass your information on to Ghada @ Boulder Public.

We need links (and permission to use them – with logo) to related organizations on our website. Proposed agencies include: REFORMA, ASCLA (ALA), BCALA, DU & Emporia. Ideally, we’d like the agencies to also post a link to our website on theirs, especially those in Colorado.

The Group would like to become a CAL Committee in October. Please express your opinion, for or against.

Oksana and Melanie will be ending their two-year terms as co-chairs of the Group. If you’re interested in taking over in October, when the Group might be transitioning to a Committee (very exciting!), please let one of us know. This is a GREAT opportunity to get involved in CAL!

How do you like the website? How can we make it a collaborative space?

The front page of the website will be updated periodically with a blog post written by someone working on a project or who provides service to a particular population. Discussion by Special Populations members and any interested library staff can ensue via comments following the post. The website is searchable, so anyone visiting the site will have access to all comments on a certain subject. Tags will also be used to make posts findable.

How can we help Colorado Virtual Library populate the Tools for Tough Times website?

Attendees (and others) will think about ways to help populate the Tools for Tough Times website for Colorado Virtual Library. Anyone with ideas should contact us via this website.

Return to Reading opportunities

Warren & Anne will submit the first blog post to be published on the website!

If you are interested in starting a Return to Reading program or if you’d like to assist with this project, contact us!
